The 3D Model is the Heart
The 3D model fulfils many roles in design and production. It produces drawings and bills of materials, it counts end-treatments, and it drives robots, etc. It directly supports tasks such as forecasting consumables (paint, blasting, welding, the need for special machines, etc.), and supports human resource requirements (man hours, specialty workers, inspection and reports, etc.).
The environment around the 3D model also includes data and information not produced by designers and production teams such as: lead time, availability, and problem areas, etc. Therefore, the 3D model is the visual representation of many different types of data and the information generated is required by various departments.
Today, Autodesk and SSI already offer the tools used as described above: AutoCAD, Navisworks, Vault, 3DS Max, V-Red, factory verticals, Advance Steel, etc. and EnterprisePlatform and ShipConstructor.
Used and Managed Directly by Most Departments
EnterprisePlatform and ShipConstructor, together with the Autodesk platform, are one solid, fundamental component of the solution. They directly handle the product model (3D model) and a lot of the related meta-data (weld lengths by type, blast areas, weights, etc.) based on the ShipConstructor MIM (the project database, Marine Information Model).
The overall solution includes other components too: software systems, people, departments, tasks, jobs, deliverables, customers, subcontractors, suppliers, etc. All people and departments receive data and information from the MIM using the EnterprisePlatform Client PublisherLT and they can also produce documents and specific data and information from the MIM directly using very simple commands.
In the same way, they add (upload) and combine their own meta-data and information to the MIM and/or to other data storage units (text files, Excel, ERP, PLM, Document Management, etc.). This can be done semi-manually, e.g. utilizing User Defined Attributes. Or, it can be done automatically using other software normally found in every company. The automatic process uses the EnterprisePlatform Server, with Nodes, Connectors, and Operations.
