Penguin Press Release

September 1, 2003

McNeel announced that Penguin, non-photorealistic rendering for Rhino, is shipping. The suggested retail price is US$/€195. Educational pricing is available for schools, students, and faculty. A special introductory price of US$/€129 is in effect until September 30, 2003.

“Penguin brings a new clarity to early design communications,” explains Fran Montero, Penguin Product Manager. “Now designers can accurately communicate ideas and concepts without a finished model and without adding details that are not relevant early in the design process.”

Sketch and cartoon style rendering

Sketch style rendering simulates pencil, ink, chalk, pen marker, and watercolor. There are configurable parameters for the wavy or straight lines and control over line width, intensity, and color. Texture fills can be used to simulate pencil sketches and watercolor. Users also can define their own texture fill styles.

Cartoon style rendering has three shading levels (highlight, base, and shadow) with sharp transitions. The silhouette, border, and crease edges can also be rendered.

Users can also select a background image and control antialiasing.

Penguin is available from more than 500 Rhino resellers worldwide. Penguin’s suggested retail price is US$195. There is a special introductory price of US$/€129 until September 30, 2003. Educational pricing is available for schools, students, and faculty. English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Czech, and Japanese language versions are included.
