NDAR – lecture at SNAME
Design of Marine Vessels: Empowering Change
SNAME T&R Conference – Wednesday 19 May 2021 – 15:00 Paris Time
Hello everyone,
we are pleased to inform you on Wednesday, May 19th at 14h London time / 15h Paris time, that NDAR will be present at the SNAME T&R (Technology & Research) weekly conference on the topic of:
Design of Marine Vessels: empowering change.
The nature, mission profile, technical requirements, financial constraints and operational obligations of ships – all types – have changed radically in recent years, to a point where traditional design methods and tools are stretched to the limit or have simply become inadequate. Still underestimated with respect to its overall impact, interior arrangement, technical and not, takes a commanding role in the design process. The design spiral and gives way to a nascent neural-network type many-to-many relational environment among the various “components” of the design space: people, software and processes. For it to work, this paradigm requires availability of data and information, not just accessibility, and the design space to be structured on and around a single source of truth backbone. Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) could represent the weave and connective tissue of such a design space, however it is fully reliant on a human-factor dependent realistic approach and on the ground-level seminal software tools that compose it -Naval Architecture calculation software, meta-data capable CAD, planning and cost estimation and prediction, etc. It follows that software tools must use common data sets without format conversion and produce bespoke output sets in full data flow automation, aptly made functional by a platform of platforms environment and AGILE compliant user-configurable deliverables. Crucially, and even more so from a psychological angle, the design space required nowadays is no longer industry delimited and is largely shaped by commonly available information technology. This session will explore examples of out-of-the-box design solutions available today.
A number of industry leaders have contributed to this work, a recording of the live interviews are included in the presentation.
